"Memories, imagination, old sentiments, and associations are more readily reached through the sense of smell than through any other channel."
-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
The short of it is:
Part whimsy, part witchy. always magical. Le Noir Bleu's aromatherapy elixirs and botanical potions are inspired by an obsession with olfactory and visual senses.
With over 20 years experience making soaps, candles, and natural perfumes,
Le Noir Bleu was created to offer an alternative to all of the scary, mass-produced, and unhealthy products lining the shelves that list numerous chemicals, hidden animal by-products, and unnatural ingredients. We prefer to use as many local ingredients as possible and everything is made by hand with a lot of loving care.
We believe in the healthy, healing power of plants and herbs and think aromatherapy
is a sadly underutilized resource for wellness.
Plant-based. Natural. Cruelty-free. Always vegan, since 1999.
Be well. Practice self care.
Be the magic you want to see in the world.

The long of it is... (founder's background & such):
Le Noir Bleu is...
Merging my love of writing, nature, plant medicine, & sensory delights into one venture: I'm all about Oregon plant pride! Generally everything I make is locally grown and/or sourced from Portland, Oregon (including our own urban garden). Some of the packaging and other PDX-unavailable items come from our PNW neighbors.
I like the idea of bringing the gorgeous outdoors of the Pacific Northwest to indoor spaces. If I had my way, the inside of my home would be covered in moss, mushrooms, lavender, and roses and I'd have crows and squirrels as housemates. I like to use outdoor elements such as essential oils and organic plant matter to create a sort of symbiotic relationship between us and nature. Nature has much to offer us and much to teach us. And I believe herbs, flowers, and oils can offer potent, natural medicine to help us achieve harmony.
I'm a visual learner with a deep appreciation for all things sensory. As a teenager, I lived a couple of years on the lovely Oregon coast in quaint Depoe Bay and the ocean forever echoes in my heart. I want to share my love for nature and it's many treasures by making healthy, magical, and high quality products. I have a B.A. and a Master's Degree in creative writing, and although I publish yearly and serve as an editor for two literary journals, I'm a very sensory artist. I sometimes think my wearable art and bath/body/beauty products actually feed my writing brain. I began making candles in 1997, just a few years after working as a skincare technician for Clinique at Macy's. I spend years studying, researching, and experimenting with plant medicines, constantly studying the craft of creating wearable tools for wellness.
I began making pressed flower jewelry, perfume, and soap back in 1999, via my former tiny one-woman company and I was grateful to have had my products featured in several international fashion magazines (In Style, Elle, Lucky, Self, etc). I'm still predominately a one-woman operation, but I like to think after many years of experience and reflection that my work has advanced to a more zen-like state.
My paternal grandmother was Scot-Irish and somewhat of a pioneer, being one of the first female deans at a university in the Midwest. She was also a chemistry professor, so I think mixing potions comes naturally to me! My Grandma Bond was also very creative and often hand-knitted, crocheted, and sewed clothes for me as a kid. And my paternal grandfather was a doctor during the GD, so perhaps this is part of where my love for medicinal elixirs comes from. My maternal grandfather loved gold-panning and rock hunting and was particularly skilled at finding petrified wood. He taught me how to gold pan and I often think of him when I'm out in nature. My maternal grandmother was the orphaned daughter of an Irish immigrant, so I use plant magick in ancient Druid and Celtic ritual traditions because it's in my blood.
I created Le Noir Bleu because the list of ingredients on so-called "natural" products horrified me. I use the least amount of ingredients possible and everything in my cold-process soaps, lotions, and essential oil spritzers are plant-based. Handmade. Natural. Healthy. Cruelty-free. Vegan. I did not stop eating meat to promote a vegan brand of bath/body/beauty like some huge celebrities have claimed to do. I stopped eating meat at the age of 12, a precocious and somewhat sensitive child, so Le Noir Bleu is vegan because it is the lifestyle that personally works for me. But we are not here to judge, preach, or even teach. We are here to share our deep passion for aromatherapy, wellness, and self-care. If you are interested in veganism, I suggest watching the film Forks Over Knives and signing up for the One Green Planet newsletter for interesting articles and tasty recipes. We believe no good (nor genuine, honest change) ever comes from pressure or bullying, so discovering a new lifestyle should be done for you, as a journey you decided to explore all on your own, not because someone made you feel forced to do so. You do you. Do what makes you proud of who you are.
In conclusion (are ya still with me? Hello, mom ;-P), my overall goal is to make items that are creative, unique, and healthy, in the hopes that others will also find the kind of joy that I find in the products. And I strive to create items that will give others a genuine sense a well-being, inner peace, and comfort. Like an unfortunately growing number of people in our society, I've suffered from PTSD, anxiety, and depression much of my life and although aromatherapy is by no means a cure for these ailments, I personally find it can offer some temporary relief and I want to share my research and findings with you via these products. These are just suggested benefits, they are not approved by the FDA, but feel free to google natural medicine and aromatherapy and you'll find many others who share in these suggested benefit beliefs.
Thank you very much for stopping by.
I like books. I like nature. I like things that smell good. And I like you. I think you are nifty.
